More Composition Book Art

Circle Grid Tree Art

I made this little piece of art in my composition notebook.  I used Indian ink pens and markers.

Also in my comp book is this little 'face jam", inspired by this Lynda Barry video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsoEydHVF5w

More Magilla

Art Collage in my gluebook "Magilla"
I had the itch to pull out my gluebook "Magilla" this weekend.  I noticed that my pages tend to fall into the same types of color themes (soft greens. blues, purples, etc..), so I decided to start the page with some random colors.  I pulled out 23 tubes of acrylic paint and used a random number selector to choose colors for me.

Each time a number was selected, I pulled the corresponding paint color and painted a swatch or two on the page.  When the page had a complete coat of paint, I started cutting words and images from my freebie paper stash (free local papers from the boxes around town).  After a bit of gluing, playing with oil pastels, and some paint stamping, I used a gold marker and a white paint pen to further embellish the page.

All in all, it felt good to play with random colors and see what happened.  I like this page much more than my previous page (shown below), which falls into one of my usual color themes.

More Sketchbook Revival Art

Continuing on with the "Sketchbook Revival" online workshop ... I worked on Day 12: Session 1 - "Cosmic Smashbooking: Power Trigger = Super Power" with Catt Geller.

I pulled out my gluebook / smashbook, "Magilla" (click "Magilla" in the tags below for more pages in this notebook), and played along with Catt.

Daily Doodle Journal: Happy

Continuing on with the "Sketchbook Revival" online workshop ... I worked on Day 8: Session 2 - "How to Start a Happy Journal" with Jennie Moraitis.  I have a few little moleskine notebooks that I received in a Dick Blick swag bag, so I decided to put one to good use and start a little daily doodle journal.

A Happy Journal includes little things that make you smile or feel joy throughout your day.  I had done this previously in my Composition notebook, but have really had a tough year - so I lost my mojo.  Here's me trying to get my mojo back & start to feel happy again.

Composition Book : Colorful Animals

As part of my effort to try to draw something every day in my composition notebook, I combined a few exercises into one.

I divided my page into 4 frames.  I looked at children's drawings online and drew similar animals with a non-photo blue pencil using my non-dominant hand.  I used a brush tip marker to ink them.  Next I used a fine tip marker to draw some type of background for each animal.

Then I grabbed 6 colored pencils with my eyes closed and proceeded to color the entire page.

I just love the bright and happy feeling this page gives me!

108 Quickly Doodled Objects

108 doodled objects
I saw an exercise posted somewhere about drawing 100 objects as a "stream of consciousness", taking about 5 seconds for each and moving on to the next.  So, I grabbed my non-photo blue pencil and my composition notebook & gave it a whirl.

It took me 3 sittings to fill the page ... but I did draw the objects very quickly in pencil.  I spent a little more time inking them in with my pen.  I (of course) went "blank" a few times and looked around for ideas.

I do see a "stream of consciousness" pattern in the drawings and I can see where I got stuck (between the toast and the butterfly, for example).

I enjoyed the exercise & it's fun to see all the little doodles in my notebook.

Composition Book Doodles

I have been filling up my composition notebook with doodles and blurbs on a regular basis.  Here are some of my favorites:

1) A duck I see often at Piedmont Park.  He has something wrong with his tongue that makes it stick out all the time.  Otherwise he seems to be getting along fine.
2) Just some folks I saw at the park.  A 20-something-ish young man walking a dog, with an older woman (mom?) walking behind carrying a bright pink baggie of poo (I presume, from the way she was carrying it.).
3) Doodle inspired by a particular shoe seen during the Olympics.
4) Ed Emberley style thumbprint kitties.
5) Doodle inspired by something I saw.
6) Monkey face inspired by Carla Sonheim's "Drawing Lab for Mixed Media Artists"
     Drawing Lab 7: Monkey Business.
7) "Jan in the Pan" from the movie "The Head that Wouldn't Die", which I was watching at the time.
8) Ed Emberley style thumbprint mice.
9) Doodle inspired by a woman I saw at a Walmart.  She was riding an electric scooter and dragging the cord behind her like a tail.
10) A spider web I noticed.
11) Ed Emberley style thumbprint dogs.

It's a lot of fun to look back through the composition book & helps me to remember more of the day to day things that occured over the summer.

Magilla : April to May

Another page from my "Magilla" notebook.  For some reason I really enjoy just slapping paint onto the page, pasting random bits and doodling without a plan.

I am participating in a 31 Day May Art Challenge at ATCsForAll.com, so I will have more art forthcoming.

Magilla : Stamping Flowers

A page from my Magilla notebook.  The boring part: trying out a new pen in August.  Later: a doodled Mandala.  Then yesterday: I went to town with the colored pencils and the rubber stamp alphabet to fill up the page!

PS: I love the stamped flowers ... but I am now suffering with an "art injury" - a horrible pain in my shoulder and upper arm, most likely caused by the repetitive stamping motion.

More Magilla

Another page from Magilla (my gluebook - notebook - smash book).  Just random things including cutouts, stamping, punches, doodles, textures, and fruit stickers.  Many of the bits and pieces are from items I received in the mail from friends and swap-bot members.

It is fun to just glue stuff down and not think about it too much.

I am adding page links to my nav bar at the top of this blog for my various journals and such.

Be sure to visit "Magilla" ... one of my summer projects this year.   "Magilla" is a notebook, gluebook, smashbook, memory book, part journal and part art playground.
