Junk Journal Page : Valentines

Another page in my "Quarantine" Junk Journal.  I made the journal nice and thick, so I still have a lot of pages to fill.  

The page theme is "Valentines" ... I started the page by using colored pencils over texture plates, and added some doggies clipped from a Kroger ad.  Mix in some paper flowers, acrylic gems, washi tape, doodles and acrylic paint ... and there you have it.  All that is missing is some text - words, names, initials, poetry, etc...  But I lost my Valentines mojo, so that will have to wait a bit.

C'est la vie.

Junk Journal Page: What I Ate

This is a collage I made in my "Quarantine Junk Journal".  I started this junk journal in March 2020 (and am still filling it up).  It measures about 8" tall by 6" wide and is about an inch thick.  It is assembled from a variety of papers (printed scrapbook papers, pages from an old sketchbook, puzzle book pages, junk mail, envelopes, brown paper, corrugated cardboard, plain typing paper, etc ...).

The page is themed "What I Ate", and is a collage using clippings from food packaging and fruit stickers.  I had a page from a "Trader Joe's" (grocery store) flyer bound into my junk journal, so I used that as my base.  I love to see the brand logos and packaging graphics, and how they change over the years.  

Junk Journal Page : A week in January

This is a little collage I made in my "Quarantine Junk Journal".  I started this junk journal in March 2020.  It measures about 8" tall by 6" wide and is about an inch thick.  It is assembled from a variety of papers (printed scrapbook papers, pages from an old sketchbook, puzzle book pages, junk mail, envelopes, brown paper, corrugated cardboard, plain typing paper, etc ...).

The page is themed "A week in January", and is mainly a collage of word and image clippings from printed papers, gift wrap, packaging, periodicals, etc....  I also added stamped images, doodles, and punches.

So ... The week of January 16-22 : I experienced a magical walk to run an errand.  It was sprinkling rain when I set out.  The rain soon picked up, and then turned to sleet.  Shortly thereafter the sleet turned to snow!  The snow became larger and fluffier!  The walk became quite delightful!  I am located in Atlanta, Georgia - so snow is a special rare event.

Other special events of the week:  I spent time with one of my favorite kitty buddies (neighbors cat who visits me from time to time).  I was in touch with a friend I knew in Junior High and High School (many years ago).   I tried Lemon Cream PopTarts for the first time (yummy!).  These were supposed have been released last summer, but didn't show up here until recently.  And to cap off the week ... I had a GREAT day between my Etsy shop and website - I sold 55 puppets in one day!  I REALLY needed that!

So, those were the highlights of a week in January.

Junk Journal Page : Vision Board

This is a little collage I made in my "Quarantine Junk Journal".  I started this junk journal in March 2020.  It measures about 8" tall by 6" wide and is about an inch thick.  It is assembled from a variety of papers (printed scrapbook papers, pages from an old sketchbook, puzzle book pages, junk mail, envelopes, brown paper, corrugated cardboard, plain typing paper, etc ...).

The page is themed "Vision Board for 2022", and is mainly a collage of word and image clippings from periodicals, on top of acrylic paint smears.  For 2022 I plan to focus on fixing my finances, which are a total disaster from events of the past few years.

I finished another page in my "Quarantine Junk Journal".  I started this junk journal in March 2020.  It measures about 8" tall by 6" wide and is about an inch thick.  It is assembled from a variety of papers (printed scrapbook papers, pages from an old sketchbook, puzzle book pages, junk mail, envelopes, brown paper, corrugated cardboard, plain typing paper, etc ...).

The page is mainly collage with printed scrapbook paper, clippings from periodicals, a bit of acrylic paint, doodles with Indian ink pens, gel pens, colored pencils, a packing tape transfer (the jar), a bit of washi tape, some stitching and a little satin bow.

The clippings include a little "Banksy" ... because it reminded me about swinging on the swings at Piedmont Park during the pandemic.  The jar that I added symbolizes my taking care to remain isolated.  Also, I selected a little news clipping about the Krispy Kreme Donut Shop being burned down by an arsonist (not once, but twice) during the pandemic.  This was the "icing on the pandemic cake", as Krispy Kreme was offering 1 free donut EVERY day if you showed a vaccine card.  This was the only Krispy Kreme within walking distance (my car died during the pandemic) ... and I would have REALLY appreciated the free donut each day.  

Strange times indeed.

 

Quarantine Junk Journal Art

Some more art from my latest junk journal.  This is a lion inspired by Carla Sonheim.  With a single line, I doodled a loose loopy lion face and used Indian ink pen to fancy it up a bit.  I then colored it with pencils and stencils to add texture.

This page was inspired by Lynda Barry's Quarantine kitties.  I drew this kitty with an Indian ink brush pen, and painted it with acrylic paints.

My Quarantine junk journal is starting to fill up with lots of crazy critters.  It is my little getaway during this time of "stay at home".

more Sketchbook Revival

I managed another Sketchbook Revival workshop, "How Wild is Your Garden? Drawing and Mark-Making in Black and White" with Karen Stamper.  This is a foldout spread in which I used all types of media, including charcoal, watercolor paints and watercolor pencils, graphite, stamping, acrylic paint, and ink pen.  Messy - but fun!

I also did the workshop "The Veleveteen Rabbit: Draw and Explore Toy Rabbits" with Nina Rycroft.  So, some quickly doodled bunnies and since it is a junk journal, I junked it up a bit with stickers and tape.  The page I doodled on was an old puzzle book page that I bound into the journal.

There are still a few more workshops I want to do ... good thing that they are open for another week or so!

Another page in my junk journal as I participate in Sketchbook Revival 2020.   

This project was Doodle Sketch with Mary Beth Shaw.  I used printed scrapbook papers, old puzzle books pages, acrylic paint, a Sharpie marker and Indian ink pens.

Sketchbook Revival / Junk Journal

I assembled a new junk journal from a variety of papers (printed scrapbook papers, pages from an old sketchbook, puzzle book pages, junk mail, envelopes, brown paper, corrugated cardboard, plain typing paper, etc ...)  The journal size is 8" tall x 6" wide by about an inch thick.  I used my RubiCoilto punch and spiral bind the pages.

I am using this junk journal to participate in Sketchbook Revival 2020.  The first projects were Box Journaling And Blob Drawings! with Carla Sonheim and Having Fun While Sketching Food! with Charlie O'Shield. 

Here is one of my Blob drawings.  I scraped a blob of tan colored paint across the page with a card.  As Carla said, "You can add a beak and anything will become a bird."

Above is my watercolor cupcake.  I pretty much stink at watercolors, but this cupcake turned out a bit better than I expected. 

It's nice to have a free workshop with new project ideas to try during quarantine time.

I will show more pages of my junk journal as I continue in the Sketchbook Revival.  It is a 2 week workshop, which is FREE to join & you may participate as much or little as you like.

Spring Forward

egg-shaped ATC doodles with haiku

This brightly colored egg is actually an egg-shaped ATC (Artist Trading Card) that I made last week during another Art-a-thon at ATCsForAll.com.  It is a haiku poem as well as eye candy.  I used my "Blick Illustrator Markers" (alcohol markers) to color it & Wow! It is so bright!

So ... I have been arting around here & there - working on several things at once.  Here are a couple more:

I collaged another page in my "Junk Mail Journal".   This little junk journal was made by taking the junk mail postcards that had accumulated near my computer, trimming them all to 4" x 6" or so, and spiral binding them into a book.  Then I just started pasting random bits inside to decorate the pages.

ATC Coin (round ATC)

And ... just for fun.  I picked up a 2.5" circle punch at a super discounted price yesterday and decided to give it a spin.  I ran across these despicable characters & had a flashback to the "Wacky Races" I used to watch on Saturday morning as a child. lol.  Good Times.

Return to Junk Mail Journal 1

I had a few pages left in my first Junk Mail Journal (circa 2008), so I decided to play around with some of my paper scraps and see what developed.  This page was made from scrapbook papers, newspaper clippings, a sticker, stamping, doodles, Indian ink pens, sparkly gel pens (the entire fish is colored with sparkle), and a paint marker.

I made the little junk journal by taking the junk mail postcards that had accumulated near my computer, trimming them all to 4" x 6" or so, and spiral binding them into a book.  Then I just started pasting random bits inside to decorate the pages.

More Magilla

Another page from Magilla (my gluebook - notebook - smash book).  Just random things including cutouts, stamping, punches, doodles, textures, and fruit stickers.  Many of the bits and pieces are from items I received in the mail from friends and swap-bot members.

It is fun to just glue stuff down and not think about it too much. 

Junk Mail Journal : free Dream

I ran across the little junk mail journal that I made years ago.  Here is one of the crazy collage pages found inside.  Just magazine and catalog bits glued to a piece of junk mail, with a bit of doodles thrown in for good measure.

Junk Journal

This is the junk journal I made for a swap in one of my art groups.  I spent about 3 months pulling it all together and really had a lot of fun with it.

The front cover evolved as I worked.  The title banner was cut from a "Trader Joe's" mailer and customized with rubber stamping.  The bluebird is a cross stitch piece from one of my original patterns.  I made the little face in the bottom corner from a recycled piece of an aluminum can that I embossed.  Also included are printed paper, lace, paperclip, ribbon flowers, paper flowers, buttons, a puffy sticker, clipping from junk mail and machine stitching.

The back cover is rather plain, but includes printed paper with a piece of a mesh orange bag and colorful binder clips.  I also added an embroidered fish pin to the binding.

Attached to the binding coils are tons of ribbons,

 lace, and handmade charms.

 You can see from the top view that I made the book really thick and chunky.  It is full of all types of papers, pockets, tags, postcards, and random bits of this and that. 

I used the largest binding coil I had on hand & it wasn't thick enough, so I created a unique binding, which I call a "flip-flop" binding.  There are 2 bound edges, one on each side of the book.  When you get to the center of the book - you flip-flop it over and start from the other side.  The two parts are joined by a center panel that is attached to both binding coils.

I embellished several pages in the book, here are just a few:

I stitched a piece of clear vinyl to the inside cover to create a pocket, in which I placed an Atlanta postcard and a couple of handmade tags.

The pocket on the left side was made from a colorful ad in a magazine.  I stuck a couple of metallic puffy stickers on it for fun.  The cityscape on the bottom right was cut with a Cricut machine. 

I love this colorful hummingbird page!  It has a printed image with ink and painted detailing, stamping, ribbons, a plastic charm, and of course - feathers.

On the left side you can see I simply added a wax paper "glassine" envelope with pieces of washi tape.  I filled the envelope with little collage images from my stash and sealed it with a little puffy heart sticker.

The bluebird page is cut from a piece of junk mail (yes, junk mail).  The apple pie page was lots of fun!  I used printed scrapbook paper over a cardboard backing to start.  I cut the pie from a recycled greeting card (it has a touch of glitter sparkle). I punched the apple inchies from an applesauce package, and added a touch of glitter. The center inchie reads "Keep calm and have some pie."  This was punched from a catalog.  I made the little apple tag from another image I had and tied it to the page with red fibers. I cut the half circle on top from a piece of red metallic paper, and finished off the page by machine stitching a red zig zag around the border.

Junk Journal Swap

Received this fabulous junk journal from my swap partner. It is covered with ribbons and charms!

It is about 2 inches thick.  The pages are made from all types of papers, cards and bags.  It is chock full of pockets, tags, and hidden surprises.

Really something special!

I have been working for the past 3 months on a junk journal to send out to my swap partner in return.  It will be sent out this week, and I will start posting pictures after my swap partner receives it.  I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise.

Junk Mail Journal : Skulls

This is a page in my junk mail journal. Awhile back I made a little art journal from my junk mail. I gathered all the little postcards and cardstock weight ads that collected near my computer, cut the larger ones down to size, and punched and bound them into a little book.

I started cutting skulls from magazines and catalogs, and pasted them on the page. I added a layer of gesso tinted with a drop of blue acrylic paint to blend the background layer. I then drew skulls with pens and markers on pieces of junk mail and paper scraps, and pasted them all over the page

I count 61 skulls ... but I may add a few more if the mood strikes.

This page is my most recent & is made up of collage, paint and doodles. All of the text was cut from junk mail. The doodles were drawn on the pattern side of security envelopes from junk mail. The page itself started out as a sales postcard.
